WELCOME TO PECOS, TEXAS - HOME OF THE WORLD'S FIRST RODEO
Pecos, Texas, is widely recognized for its sweet cantaloupes, its ties to the legendary character Pecos Bill, and, most notably, as the “Home of the World’s First Rodeo.”
The Town of Pecos City grew out of its unique position as a crossroads along major cattle and wagon trails, including the Butterfield Overland Mail Route and the historic Loving-Goodnight Trail. Cowboys passing through often put their skills to the test, which fueled friendly rivalries and local bragging rights. On July 4, 1883, those rivalries turned official when Pecos hosted what became known as the world’s first rodeo—an Independence Day tradition that continues to this day.
Pecos is now emerging as a leading retail, service, and hospitality center for the Trans-Pecos region, thanks to its prime location at the intersection of IH-20 and U.S. 285. IH-20 connects Pecos east to the Dallas–Fort Worth metroplex and west to El Paso, while U.S. 285 provides access north into New Mexico and south through West Texas.
The hospitality industry continues to grow, with national hotel brands and local investments bringing millions of dollars in new development. This growth supports tourism tied to the rodeo, community events, and Pecos’ position as a regional travel stop. Hotel Occupancy Tax (HOT) revenues now provide a major source of reinvestment for community facilities, including upgrades to the Reeves County Rodeo Grounds and Convention Center and expanded tourism promotion.
While oil & gas remain a key industry, Pecos is strategically investing in education, healthcare, logistics, and regional entertainment to diversify and strengthen its economy. Strategic partnerships with Reeves County, Reeves County Hospital District, and Pecos-Barstow-Toyah ISD continue to drive infrastructure and public service improvements, ensuring that growth is sustainable and community-driven.
From its historic rodeo roots to its modern role as a regional hub, Pecos is focused on balanced growth, economic opportunity, and community pride. The city continues to build on its unique heritage while positioning itself as a leader in the Trans-Pecos region.
