Utility Operators (many positions)

Under supervision, operates, monitors, and maintains plant, equipment, and surrounding grounds associated with the treatment of City water and/or sewer.



  • Essential and other responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
    • Installation, maintenance and repair of water lines and distribution system.
    • Monitoring and operating of water and sewer lines to achieve maximum efficiency, reliability and safety. Notifying supervisor of maintenance, safety or any other issues that arise.
    • Aid in the development, implementation and modification of onsite water and sewer systems.
    • Follows all onsite and City safety policies and procedures
    • Follows current policies, procedures and regulations placed into effect by Federal, State and City environmental regulations. 
    • Repair and construct water and sewer taps, water and sewer lines and other projects that will be assigned by the supervisor. 
    • Maintain records for the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality compliance.



Reports to the Utilities Superintendent


Exercises autonomy and sound judgement over daily tasks. 


High School Diploma or any equivalent combination of education, experience, and training that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.


Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a bachelor degree in Business Administration.

Prior Experience in government or law enforcement administration


Knowledge of generally accepted safety protocols and SOP’s.

Basic Knowledge of water distribution equipment; ie. filters, pumps, hoses, etc.

Intermediate knowledge and ability using various power tools, mechanical/electrical devices.

Basic understanding and use of established safety practices.

Intermediate ability to perform a series of procedural steps, detect and resolve errors.

Mechanically Inclined; basic understanding of mechanical installation and troubleshooting

Preferred experience (1 year hands-on experience in construction or plumbing).

Ability to establish and maintain effective workplace relationships with staff, departments, city officials, vendors and the public.



Must hold and maintain a valid Texas State Driver’s license with an acceptable driving record

Ability to obtain Class D water certificate within one year of hire.

The work is mostly performed outdoors, year round  and can including performing tasks in significantly fluctuating temperatures.

This is an FLSA Non-Exempt position. Work is generally completed on a regularly scheduled basis with the normal workweek being 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, Monday through Friday, however additional work to meet deadlines or attend evening meetings may be required. Employees in the Water Department are subject to on-call scheduling.
